The University of Potsdam, Faculty of Arts, School of Jewish Theology is seeking to fill the following position by 01st October 2018:
Academic Staff Member for Jewish Liturgy and Aramaic (m/f)Requisition No.: 240/2018
The position is a part-time research and teaching position for 20 hours of work per week (50 %). The salary is determined by the collective bargaining agreement for public em- ployees in Germany (TV-L 13 Ost). This is a temporary position limited to a term of 3 years in accordance with Section 2 subsection 1 of the Academic Fixed-Term Contract Law (WissZeitVG). The language of instruction will be German or English.
We expect:
- The successful candidate holds an MA or PhD in Jewish Studies, Rabbinic Studies or a comparable degree
- The successful candidate will be responsible for the teaching of Jewish liturgy within the study programs of Jewish Theology (BA and MA), as well as for the teaching of Aramaic in the BA program
- The successful candidate is able to provide an overview of the development of liturgi- cal texts and practices. This encompasses the theory of liturgy in religious traditions, particularly in Judaism, and in depth knowledge of the most important liturgy experts including their methods and positions. The candidate is able to teach the structure and development of the classical prayer books (siddur and mahzor) as well as the perspectives and creative approaches of Reform Judaism and Conservative (Masorti) Judaism. In addition to the structure of worship services, the candidate is expected to teach the life-cycle rituals, the historical development of these rituals and contempo- rary forms of these suitable for particular circumstances
- The successful candidate is able to teach Biblical and Talmudic Aramaic at a basic level
- Engage in research and further study in the area of Jewish Liturgy for teaching in higher education
- Collaborate in research projects and research funding applications
The University of Potsdam houses the first and only Jewish Divinity School in Europe. The School of Jewish Theology was founded in the tradition of the Wissenschaft des Juden- tums in 2013 (http://www.juedischetheologie-unipotsdam.de/index.html). Potsdam is an attractive historical city and its palaces are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is close to Berlin, a culturally vibrant city.
Under the laws of the federal state of Brandenburg, employees under this contract are permitted to dedicate at least 33% of their contract time for their scientific qualification.
