The British and Irish Association for Jewish Studies (BIAJS) was founded in 1975 as a learned society and professional organisation on a non-profit-making basis. Its aims are to nurture, cultivate and advance the teaching and research in Jewish culture and history in all its aspects within Higher Education in the British Isles.
BIAJS initiates and supports research and publication in the field of Jewish Studies:
- BIAJS organizes an annual scholarly conference usually in July
- BIAJS supports scholarly publications in the field with its organisation of an annual book prize for an outstanding monograph in Jewish studies
- BIAJS supports students through bursaries for conference attendance and organises essay-length prizes, an undergraduate dissertation prize and two published article prizes (one for postgraduates, and one for early career researchers)
- BIAJS collects resources on Jewish Studies programmes and related courses in the UK and Ireland
- BIAJS campaigns for an adequate representation of the interdisciplinary nature of Jewish Studies in Britain and Ireland (REF, funding, etc.)
