BIAJS Statement on War in Israel
Over the weekend, we watched in horror as Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on Israel, kidnapping, killing, and injuring civilians. The region is now at war, and many people in Israel and Palestine are suffering the consequences. On behalf of the British and Irish Association for Jewish Studies, we are writing to express our shock and devastation over these horrific events. For members in our association, this war is very personal. Many of us live or have lived in Israel, and many others have close ties to the country. Please know you have our support and our deepest sympathies.
We are also aware that intensification of the conflict in the region impacts directly on British and Irish campuses, and that Jewish Studies academics and students can be placed in difficult positions at these times. If you need support as a Jewish Studies scholar, please get in touch with us. You should also report any antisemitic incidents in the UK to the Community Security Trust: https://cst.org.uk/report-incident
Humanitarian agencies supplying aid to those affected in Israel can be found on the World Jewish Relief website: https://www.worldjewishrelief.org/news/war-in-israel/
