‘Space, Stuff and Sacrality: Everyday Engagements with Religion in Society’
Call for Papers: 16th to 17th June 2022 Online
University of Leeds
We are excited to open our call for papers on the topic of ‘Space, Stuff and Sacrality: Everyday Engagements with Religion in Society.’ By focusing on religious engagements with the everyday “from below”, this conference aims to challenge authoritative constructions of religious practice “from above”. We seek to examine how “space” and “stuff” are shaped by and help to shape everyday religious practice and belief and welcome interdisciplinary submissions that do so.
This conference aims to engage with the following questions:
How does ‘space and stuff’ shape everyday religious experience?
How do people use spaces and objects in religious practice?
How do different disciplines and methodologies speak to the engagement between space, stuff and the sacred?
How does material culture shape our understanding of religion?
Papers which engage with these questions across disciplines and throughout history (from the ancient world to modern) will be considered. Example disciplines may include (but are not restricted to): theology, history, archaeology, architecture, art history, literary studies, cultural studies, film, music, sociology, anthropology, philosophy. We encourage diversity in methodological approaches, geographical scope, temporal period, and religious and spiritual traditions.
Early career researchers (including postdoctoral researchers, doctoral students, and Masters students) are invited to submit proposals for twenty- minute papers.
Please submit abstracts (max. 250 words) and author bios (max. 100 words) to religionandsociety22@gmail.com by 15th April 2022.
