On Tuesday 22 and Wednesday 23 September Lund University (Sweden) will be hosting the Nordic Network for Jewish Studies‘ first postgraduate forum, themed on Ancient and Medieval Jewish History and Literature.
Papers will be presented by six current doctoral students from around the Nordic region working on projects that relate to the study of ancient and medieval Jewish history. Each paper will be presented in brief followed by comments from a respondent and general discussion.
The programme also features a masterclass in reading Talmudic texts by Prof Philip Alexander (FBA, Emeritus Manchester) entitled, ‘“If they are not prophets, they are sons of prophets”: Tosefta Pesahim 4:13-14 and its reception in the Yerushalmi and the Bavli.’ The session will focus on practicing close reading skills and developing an understanding of the way Talmudic texts work for those who are less familiar with them. Texts will be provided in Hebrew and in English with notes and bibliography to those attending the session.
You are more than welcome to join us for part or all of the programme. The whole event will take place on zoom, and all presentations and discussions will take place in English. The programme is available on the Nordic Network’s website, as is more information about the event and how to register. We hope that interested members of the BAJS PG/ECR community will feel especially welcome to join us, and look forward to seeing some of you at the event.
The organisers are grateful to the European Association for Jewish Studies for supporting this event.
This looks like a great event, I’m looking forward to it.
