UNIVERSITÄT POTSDAM
The unique School of Jewish Theology, created in 2013 as part of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Potsdam, invites applications for the following professorship, with the appointment planned for October 1, 2020: Full Professorship (W3) for Bible and Its Jewish Exegesis.
The successful candidate will represent the entire field of the Hebrew Bible in teaching and re-search. This requires engaging the text, tradition, and exegesis of the Hebrew Bible from a theological perspective. The professor will place the Bible in the context of its historical, social, religious, and cultural origins and environments, taking traditional Jewish Bible receptions into account as complementing historical-critical approaches. The professor’s responsibilities include teaching in the various degree programs in Jewish theology (among them an English-language MA) as well as the supervision of doctoral dissertations and habilitation theses (post-doctoral dissertation). Responsibilities also include active participation in the University’s self-governing administrative bodies. The professor will cooperate with the departments of Jewish and Religious Studies, Life Orientation-Ethics-Religion (L-E-R), the forum “Religion in Context”, as well as with the Selma Stern Center for Jewish Studies Berlin-Brandenburg. Moreover, cooperation with our program in Biblical Archaeology is desirable.
Prerequisites for the appointment are demonstrable teaching qualifications; a Habilitation or an equivalent record of research in the fields of Hebrew Bible, Jewish or Judaic Studies as well as experience acquiring third-party project funding and organizing academic conferences. Applicants shall be members of a Jewish congregation. Non-native speakers are expected to acquire sufficient skills to function in the German academic environment over a transition period of two years.
The following application requirements for professors must be documented in accordance with Section 41 of the Brandenburg Higher Education Act (Brandenburgisches Hochschulgesetz, BbgHG): a completed university degree, pedagogical talent, and a particular aptitude for scientific and scholarly work, as is typically documented by a dissertation project; comprehensive competences in science management and additional scholarly achievements as evidenced by a Habilitation (post-doctoral dissertation), a junior professorship or work as a research associate at an institution of higher education or an extramural research institution, or scholarly activity in the private sector, or in a similar social field, whether in Germany or abroad. The appointment procedure is conducted in accordance with Section 40 BbgHG. The University strives for a balanced gender ratio at all levels. Severely disabled applicants will be given preferential consideration in the event of equal qualification. We expressly invite applications from people with migration backgrounds.
