The University of Oxford and the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies are seeking an exceptional scholar in the field of Hebrew and Jewish Studies to appoint to a senior academic position (Grade RSIV) in Hebrew and Jewish Studies, and to the position of President of the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies (OCHJS) in succession to Professor Martin Goodman. The University appointment may be at Associate Professor or Full Professor level, depending on the experience of the person appointed.

For the University, the postholder will provide academic leadership in this area, maintaining an international research profile and providing teaching for both undergraduate and graduate programmes. More specifically, she/he will undertake and publish research in Hebrew and Jewish Studies and will seek external funding to support research in this field. She/he will give lectures and will teach and supervise undergraduate and graduate students, and will contribute to examining and administration for the Faculty of Oriental Studies.

As President of OCHJS, the main focus will be to direct the activities of OCHJS, a charity whose principal activity is the advancement of research and education in this field. The President will work in close co-operation with the Board of Governors of OCHJS to provide effective management of the charity and to promote its national and international profile. This will involve managing the relationship of OCHJS with external institutions, leading fundraising for research and development, encouraging development in Hebrew and Jewish Studies within the University and in the outside world, and managing the administration of OCHJS, including its administrative staff.

The two roles of the postholder, as a senior scholar in the University and as President of the Centre, carry equal weighting.

Applications are welcome from scholars with advanced academic qualifications (completed doctorate) and a strong record of research, publication and teaching in any area of Hebrew and Jewish Studies which complements existing expertise in the University of Oxford. The person appointed will be elected to a Professorial Fellowship of Corpus Christi College.
