The School of Oriental and African Studies (University of London) teaches Israeli Studies in the School of Languages and Cultures (Dr. Yair Wallach, Dr. Tamar Drukker) and Jewish Studies in the School off History, Religions, and Philosophies (Prof. Catherine Hezser). The latter offers a variety of UG and PG courses in Jewish Studies ranging from Introduction to Judaism to Jewish Identity, The Role and Representation of Women in Judaism, The Holocaust and the Problem of Evil, and Modern Jewish Thought.
SOAS is also home to the Centre for Jewish Studies, a research centre established in the 1990s. The Centre is committed to the promotion of Jewish and Israeli Studies through scholarship, teaching, book launches, workshops, public events, conferences and symposia, debate and discussion. It seeks to research and to communicate the richness of the Jewish experience and thereby raise the profile of Jewish and Israeli Studies at SOAS.
SOAS has academic staff who are experts in Jews and Judaism from ancient to modern times. They cover the history, literature, culture, and politics of Jews in Israel and the Diaspora. Students are not obliged to but have the option to learn the Hebrew language and read literary texts in their original. SOAS favours a multi-disciplinary approach to Jewish Studies that is not limited to religious matters but deals with all aspects of Jewish culture.
